FRI MAY 27 Understanding Alzheimer’s & Dementia
In the Fellowship Hall. Please bring a bag lunch.
The second program will go into a deeper dive of what is Alzheimer’s and dementia, including the public health impact, the risk factors, the continuum of the disease and current treatments. This will be conducted by a trained volunteer educator from the Alzheimer’s Association.

JOY (Just Older Youth) meet the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Roser Church is located at 512 Pine Avenue, Anna Maria, near the City Pier. Bernice Pelea is a Care & Support Program Manager with the Alzheimer’s Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, covering Sarasota, Manatee and Desoto Counties.  In this role, Bernice oversees all care and support activities and services, including community education, support groups, and care consultations for people impacted by dementia. She also has the privilege of working with a dedicated group of volunteers and community partners whose aim is to ensure our community has access to the timely support and resources needed to address this disease.

Prior to joining the Association, Bernice worked for 20 years in international health and development—starting as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras and, most recently, working in the areas of maternal newborn health and HIV in Latin America and Africa. A registered nurse, Bernice received her graduate degrees in public health and nursing at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland, respectively, and holds undergraduate degrees in biology and psychology from Emory University. In her free time, Bernice likes to read good books, dance salsa, and watch Captain Underpants movies with her 7-year-old son.
