SUN DEC 10 ♦  8:30 & 10:00 A Service of hope, peace, joy and love.

A candle is lit, a narration is spoken and beautiful settings of familiar carols with a newly written verse will be sung—one piece for each of the advent candles:  Light of Hope, Light of Peace,  Light of Joy, Light of Love, Light of Christ.

Orchestra: flute, trumpet, violin, cello, piano
Narrators: Sandy Dahl, Priscilla Seewald
Choirs: Roser Cantata Choir and Joyful Noise Children’s Choir

In the quiet of the Sanctuary, with the soft colors of the sun streaming through the stained glass windows, the music and narrative invites you to experience the hope, peace, joy and love as the shepherds and wise men did many years ago. In the matter of an hour you will be transported back in time as you listen and participate in the beloved story. Please join us as we celebrate the coming of the Light of Christ!

Candles & Carols is a presentation of the Advent cantata by Pamela Martin and Mark Hayes directed by Kristen Stanton, Director of Music Ministries. The instrumentalists are: Phyllis O’Keef – piano, Mary Deur – flute, Joy Chatzistamatis – violin, Isaac Mingus – cello and John Gunkler – trumpet.

Isaac Mingus is a cellist and bassist in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. He began playing the bass at the age of twelve under the tutelage of Christopher Mink at Pine View High School. Now twenty, he is a recent graduate of the State College of Florida with an Associate of Arts degree, where he was a student of Robyn Bell, John Miller, and Fred Gratta. He performs locally in numerous jazz ensembles, the Charlotte Symphony, and the Venice Symphony.

Born and raised in Sarasota, Florida, Joy Chatzistamatis began studying the violin at age three. Some of her earliest performances were playing at her church, local nursing homes, and Suzuki recitals. Since then, she has won the 2011 and 2013 Sarasota Orchestra’s Edward and Ida Wilkof Young Artists Solo Competition, earning an opportunity to solo with both orchestras. For eight years, she was a part of the Sarasota Orchestra Youth Orchestra Program and served as Concertmaster of the Youth Philharmonic. Summer music festivals are an integral part of a musician’s studies. Joy has been fortunate enough to attend the Flaine International Music Academy in France, the MasterWorks Festival in Winona lake, Indiana, and the CastelBarry Chamber music Festival in Montpeyroux, France. She was a student of the Sarasota Music Conservatory which was founded by her former teacher, Lena Cambis, whom she studied with for six years, and Sean O’Neil. Joy has performed in masterclasses for Chad Hoopes, Jessica Mathes, and David and Linda Cerone. She has also worked with Sarasota natives and world famous band, Boyce Avenue, recording multiple songs for them as well as a music video. A recent high school graduate, Joy now works for a local ad-tech company, AdRizer, but continues her music playing with the Venice Symphony and anywhere else her music takes her.
